The clink-clink heard when passing over a manhole cover is a familiar sound, but rocking manhole covers can be a major problem for public works departments. Constant vehicle and pedestrian traffic passing over slightly unevenly seated manhole covers quickly leads to greater wear on the support frame. This action accelerates, producing progressively greater movement and eventually this is so great that the manhole cover cracks.
To replace the seat or frame is a major job which can take days and cause a great deal of inconvenience to the public. Replacing the frame entails digging up the road, lifting out the old frame and lowering in the new, then remaking the road.
Belzona has a solution for stopping the rocking of these manhole covers. After basic surface prep, sufficient Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) should be applied to the seat to rebuild all worn areas. To prevent the cover sticking to the Belzona, the underside should be coated with Belzona 9411 (Release Agent). The cover is then replaced in the frame and pressed down firmly, ensuring it is level and where possible flush with the frame. After 4 hours cure (and if we add electric heat we can shorten that time) traffic can be allowed to pass over the manhole again.
